Strategy

The Nanoengineering Group focuses on research at the interface between fundamental nanoscience and applied engineering, particularly in the area of photonic medical diagnostics, environmental issues, and food control. By introducing nanotechnology and photonic approaches, we bridge the gap between physical sciences and industrial as well as clinical applications to finally gain added value for novel biomedical methods, devices, and instrumentation. The acceleration of technology transfer is the driving motor for our research activities.

Early detection of Alzheimer's

Illustration Alzheimer detection project

We are investigating methods for holistic, non-invasive early detection of Alzheimer’s disease by measuring human body fluids using microscopy imaging and Raman, surface-enhanced Raman, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy techniques, supported by artificial intelligence including data fusion.

Plasmonic detection of biomarkers

Plasmonic detection of biomarkers

In this research line we investigate highly sensitive plasmonic devices with different nanostructures. We use in-silico modeling to find optimized designs and use them for liquid biopsy, food control or measurement of environmental conditions.

Photonic monitoring of physiology

Photonic monitoring of physiology

We develop methods and devices for continuous non-invasive monitoring of physiological parameters of the human body

Photonic monitoring of vital signs

Photonic monitoring of vital signs

We develop methods and devices for continuous long-term monitoring of vital signs

Plasmonic supercrystals

Plasmonic supercrystals

We are optimizing the fabrication of plasmonic supercrystals to further push the limit of detection in Surface-Enhanced Spectroscopy as SERS and plasmonic methods as SPR or LSPR

Lung cancer detection through AI-driven spectroscopy

Illustration for lung cancer detection project

Unleashing a ground-breaking combination of vibrational spectroscopy, machine learning, and state-of-the-art statistics, we're redefining lung cancer detection—achieving astonishing accuracy and setting new standards in life-saving healthcare innovation.

Vibrational spectroscopy in cell therapy

Illustration for cell therapy project

Liquid tumors can be treated by CAR T cell therapy (chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy) applied to live cells. Challenges include quality control, manufacturing, and safety, which may trigger immune responses in recipients. We're investigating Raman and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy throughout therapy, combined with artificial intelligence, to understand cell characteristics and enhance treatments.
